PhD Scholarship


In line with its strategy to support promising junior scholars, the ASCN programme launched in October 2010, in cooperation with the department of Graduate Studies of Ilia State University (Georgia), a PhD. scholarship programme, offering 2 doctoral students the opportunity to benefit from an attractive monthly grant and from the opportunity to spend 3 months as visiting researchers at the University of Fribourg. The competition was open to first year PhD. candidates in political science from Ilia State University.


The two PhD candidates that were selected are Natalia Machabeli and Sandro Gabisonia.

In her PhD project, Natalia Machabeli focuses on the issues of ethnic identity and ethnic conflict while using Georgia as a case study. She wants to find out which factors, related to ethnicity, contributed to the outbreak of violence in the conflict over South Ossetia.

Sandro Gabisonia is interested in theories of nationalism. His PhD Project is focusing on the role and impact of nationalism in Georgian politics.
 

Duration


The scholarship is intended for a period of one year with possibility of extension depending on the state of progress of the PhD thesis. It covers the period November 2010 - October 2011.
