Qualitative Data Analysis

ASCN Methodology Training, 4-5 March 2011, Tbilisi

The workshop, held at Ilia State University (Tbilisi) on 4–5 March 2011, introduced participants to the theory and practice of qualitative data analysis, emphasising its most commonly used form—thematic analysis. The workshop served as a capacity building tool for young researchers involved in ASCN funded projects, although some external PhD students also attended the workshop.

The workshop featured interactive lectures on different aspects of thematic analysis, which included building a body of data, coding the data and presenting it in written form. Topics, such as data analysis and research processes; analysis of interview data; building a body of data; and the preparation, assessment and handling of data were covered. During the practice sessions, participants worked in groups on a body of data created in part by the participants themselves.

Trainer

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Lea Sgier. Dr. Sgier is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the Central European University (CEU) in Budapest and a lecturer at the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis and Collection, University of Essex (UK). Her areas of interest are: qualitative methodology, gender and politics, political representation, citizenship, the nation-state and nationalism.

Participants

The workshop was of particular importance and help to junior researchers who had little knowledge of the theory and practice of qualitative data analysis, since they will need to assist in the analyzing of data collected for their ASCN funded research projects.
