Financial Support for 12 New Research Projects

In July 2011, the ASCN Scientific Board selected 12 new social sciences research projects from Armenia and Georgia. The selected projects address transition-related issues falling under the following umbrella topic: "Political Transformation and Social Change" (Armenia), "Institutions, Networks and Power" (Georgia) or "Religion, Nation and Identities" (Georgia).

The total budget for each project is 40,000 Swiss Francs (CHF) distributed over two years, with a maximum of 20,000 CHF allotted per year. Altogether, 84 researchers are involved, including 25 PhD candidates.

International Conference

ASCN organizes on 10-11 June 2011 in Luzern (Switzerland) a conference entitled "Variants of Differentiation in the Regions of World Society". The conference will question the sociological theory of differentiation. See the full programme here.

ASCN organizes on 5-7 May a workshop on academic writing and publishing.
The workshop is designed for scholars from ASCN funded research projects. It will be conducted by Dr. Lea Sgier and Dr. Simone Baglioni.

ASCN announces 2 scholarships for participation in ECPR Methodology Summer School in Ljubljana (29 July - 13 August 2011). It is open to PhD students in social sciences from Ilia State University. Application deadline: 30 March 2011.

ASCN is publishing an assessment of the research capacities in social sciences and humanities in Armenia.
The study was conducted by the Caucasus Institute based in Yerevan and serves as a reference document for the extension of the ASCN Programme to Armenia

Georgia - First Research Projects with ASCN Funding

In March 2010, ASCN launched a call for proposals, open to researchers from and resident in Georgia. The research topics to be submitted had to be relevant to transition themes, and they had to fit into the umbrella topic defined specifically for Georgia “Transformation, Identities and Social Capital”.

Thirty-nine applications were submitted by 7 June 2010. Following the evaluation process by the ASCN Scientific Board nine research projects were approved for funding.

The coordination of these research projects is ensured by the ASCN Local Coordination Unit (LCU) hosted by the Ilia State University. Further information, including abstracts, is to be found on the following webpage.

On 16 September 2011, a scientific conference on “Interagency United Efforts to Combat Domestic Violence in Georgia: Local or Western Agenda?", realated to a research project financed by ASCN, was held in Tbilisi.
